Grooming

Grooming is an essential, not just in Persians and Exotics, but all breeds. In Persians however, it is a bit more complicated and vital to the health and well being of your cat. Regular grooming and bathing will help to prevent matting, a major concern in long haired cats.

Some of my Favorite Tips

bullet

Of course the obvious, comb/brush daily

Regular Baths - in most cases once a month should be fine, unless your kitten has the type of coat that gets a bit greasy, in that case you may want to bath more often.  Remember, a clean coat is less apt to mat, and your kitten will be healthier for it.

Brush your kitten out before bathing, this cuts down on tangles.

Check water temperature the same as you would for a human baby's bath.
It should be on the warm side (about body temp), but not hot.

Fill your sink to an appropriate level first, before bringing the kitten into the room.  The noise of the water running close to them may cause a panic at first.  Usually by the time rinse time comes around they are a bit more relaxed and used to the idea of a bath.  Have towels on hand to wrap you kitty in as soon as the bath is over.  This is also a good time to cuddle and comfort a bit.

Remember, they did just have a BATH after all.  (smile)
